Tooth Extraction

At Brixton Smiles, we pride ourselves on our gentle, minimally-invasive approach to dentistry.

That means we’ll always do everything we can to help repair and protect an ailing tooth although there are times when a tooth extraction might be necessary.

Why might I need a tooth extraction?

If we recommend the need for a tooth extraction, it is likely because a tooth has been damaged or decayed beyond repair. Other reasons for tooth extraction include infected or impacted wisdom teeth, overcrowding, and in some cases, baby teeth that have yet to fall out when adult teeth erupt.

What is the treatment like?

We understand that a tooth extraction can be daunting, but with our gentle, highly skilled approach, we will ensure you feel comfortable and at ease the whole time.

We will first administer a local anaesthetic which will stop you from feeling anything in the area we are working on while remaining awake and alert.

Then, we will gently widen the socket of the tooth before loosening and removing it from the socket. The area will be cleaned and we may administer stitches to help the wound heal.

What should I do after the treatment?

We will go through all your after-care needs with you at the time, but it’s important to avoid hot and cold drinks immediately after the treatment.

Once the effects of the local anaesthetic wear off, you will probably start to experience some pain, which is perfectly normal.

You should be able to counteract this with painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, but if the pain persists for a few days after, you will need to return to the practice for a check-up.
